Going on a vacation to Europe from Canada and need some tips on taking (or not) taking my Iphone.is texting back to Canada free? is internet access Free? will i be able to charge the phone batteries? What charges from the service provider should i be wary of.or is it better to just forget about the phone for a few weeks?

As far as charging the batteries you will need an adapter for Europe and that depends on which country you are visiting to what sort of adapter you will need. E.g. UK has different plug sockets to Germany. So that would be worth looking into first. I don't know about charges but I imagine it would be expensive - you are probably best to contact your provider and ask them about what they charge as this is probably specific to your contract and service provider. But Europe has plenty of internet cafès so you can leave your phone and still not be completely cut off from Canada and the rest of the world! :-)
If you are planning to 'roam' while using the iPhone (basically keeping you Canadian number, but using it on whatever European network pops up at the time), it's going to cost you. Internet access is most definitely not free when doing that, but under the Settings in your iPhone you can switch off roaming which means it won't hit up that. You can still connect to wifi networks with that switched off, and in quite a few coffee shops/hostels/hotels those are free of course, so there you would be able to access the internet (or skype for example) free of charge. Sending text messages would cost you whatever your Canadian provider charges you for doing this abroad. Usually not cheap either. Of course if you are connected to wifi, and you are texting someone who has an iPhone, it would go over Apple's own servers which would make it free. You can save a TON of money doing that, but that depends on who you are texting. Those are the text messages that show blue in a conversation. The green ones are the paid ones.
Alternatively, you could look at getting a special sim card just for your trip which allows you way cheaper text messages and calls, but it will mean a new phone number. A side benefit is that you pay the same rates regardless of which country in Europe you are. We've got a bit of info on that on Travellerspoint.

Just did this. Just flipping on airplane mode will shut off data usage and make it safe for travel. No incoming calls or texts. Wifi enables texting through apple messaging or whatever it's called when the bubbles are blue. Internet usage through your data plan will be quite expensive. Skype or FaceTime enable voice calls with or without video. If you need a phone go buy a shitty prepaid burner at a phone store. Or a SIM card to a jail broken iPhone I believe works. Or you can just borrow a cafe/hostel/resteraunts phone of you're going local number. Don't need the international plans. Think I covered it all if the above guys didnt
Bring your iPhone. Google maps is quite handy on the go. Calculator. Plus it can replace a laptop which takes up mucho bag space. Just get a universal adapter for 5 bucks
Rather than using Airplane Mode as suggested earlier, I use my iPhone for travel with Data Roaming turned off (Settings>General>Mobile Data>Data Roaming=Off).
Doing it this way means it's live as a phone, if something happens back home they can get me, and if I want the charges I can call out (I don't, normally). But no data charges, just works as a WiFi device in hotels/hostels/eateries.
For charging I use a worldwide USB charger - this one comes kitted out with the four main pin adapters (UK, Europlug, USA, and ANZ) and it's very compact.

This is a good solution, for me, for internet while travelling. No issues with logging in, site security, etc, no charges, compact.
