Travelling South America and looking for work

Ok so my lovely girlfriend and I a currently travelling around South America for seven months, we are on a pretty tight budget and I was wondering if anyone could help me with some pointers or some tips on working for accommodation or even just finding bar work to earn a little bit of cash while travelling? Also has anyone done this before? or is anyone currently in South America and wanting to catch up? We are currently in Rio de Janeiro and will leave in Sunday the 18th of February and start heading south to Uruguay and Argentina.

Generally you need some special skills and excellent Spanish at the very minimum, but even then you're in a market where you're competing against locals working at low wages. In other words, unless those extra skills are very special then why would an employer choose you over a local?

Good luck.

Cheers,
Terry

Since you're on a tight budget you're going to find Uruguay and Argentina really difficult. Those are expensive countries. And don't forget the reciprocity fee to enter Argentina...

I agree with Terry. I've lived in Mexico for 2 years and you need a work visa and you are competing with locals who sorely need the money as much as you. I'd suggest talking to the locals and seeing if you can do any side jobs here and there, but you would have to work your charm and even then, even if you speak the language fluently, your chances aren't great.

Terry, I didn't know about a fee to enter Argentina, thanks for the input! I just joined the site as I'm hoping to travel the latin america countries at a later date myself.

Ok thanks for what I will take as constructive criticism!!! But we have traveled other continents in the world and most places will have hostels that will allow you to work reception or clean as payment for your rooms or work in traveller bars. I was hoping to find information off other travellers about such places in Argentina as I know there will be some we just need to find them. So cheers!!!

Brenda, the reciprocity fee applies to citizens of the US, Canada and Australia. You pay it on-line and print out the receipt before you hit the border, otherwise no entry...
