Traveling alone advice

Hi I'm thinking of going traveling alone but I'm nervous about doing so. I've never done it before.Any advice? I'm thinking of starting in my own country first and then traveling abroad to a nearby country, and then going further away each subsequent time I travel. A step by step approach rather than going in at the deepend beginning with a longhaul trip to the other side of the world. Thats my plan what do you think of it?

Impossible to comment when you give no clue where you live or where you're planning to visit, but in general your logic makes no sense because some of the safest/easiest countries for a first time nervous traveller may be on the other side of the world - Thailand being one possible example.

Good luck, but I think you need to re-think your logic...

Cheers,
Terry

I think I understand the thoughts behind your plan and presuming you live somewhere on the European continent, the trip to a nearby country probably seems like a 'safe' option as you can always 'duck' home if something goes wrong - yes?

As an Australian I'm used to the idea that travelling internationally means nothing is a quick flight away but I am interested to know which part makes you apprehensive—different culture/food? Long flight? Being on your own? Unfamiliar surroundings?

Though the proximity of European countries may feel easier, if culture differences, foreign languages, and unfamiliar surroundings worry you, it will be the same 1000km from home as it will 10,000km from home.

My point is don't let physical distance be a deterrent for your travel dreams.

OK lets get real here, you can travel in the West and get into some dangerous areas, if that's what you are worried about.

Thing is you need to be cautious especially at night in any area you are unfamiliar with, a lot of it is just common sense.

Accommodation wise try hostels, you will find like minded people there and have someone to talk too and advise you on which places to stay away from.

DON'T flaunt your wealth, cameras, watches, wads of money, designer cloths. Just don't do it it's not sensible. Buy trousers/shorts with zip pockets they are perfect for keeping money in and use a money belt for the things you don't need to use.

I've been traveling for years started off hitchhiking in the 1960s and it was only last year that we had any problem and that was in Quinto top stolen from my hand in the day and Dominica gear stolen from a beach.

Things like this do happen use common sense and if anyone threatens you give them the money.

You'll find most people in this world just want to work put a roof over their head and have enough to eat, they are respectable people but there are some that will do you harm so you have to be careful, if you are unsure about anything DON'T.

I have the same experience as you. My first independent travel is also from my country. It is my first time to go a strange place outside my hometown. I was worried about so many things such as accommodation, transportation, some other troubles. I conclude the following tips:

1. Make sure where you are going to visit and how many famous attractions in this destinations.
2. Booke hotels and transportation beforehand.
3. About packing. Take some standing drugs, camera, snacks, etc.

If you plan to travel outside your country, you can consider to partake a China tour package.
