TRAVELLING ROUND AMERICA BY AMTRAK FOR 3 MONTHS & THEN RTW.

Hi, I'm soon to be made redundant from my job and I'm gonna go travelling round the world. First stop is North America for a 3 month trip by Amtrak. I'll be coming back to England for a few months and then I'll be off to South America, New Zealand and South East Asia. Can anybody give me any travelling advice for any of these destiantions, what to pack, what not to pack, how much money to take, what to see & do etc.

I just typed up a nice long reply and it was deleted so to summarize.. West coast patch that's nice for hiking could be Zion(my favorite)-Grand Canyon(havasupai area is amazing)- Las Vegas for a break- into California- Yosemite/San Fransisco. And add New Orleans to the must do list!!

For SE Asia. Laos deserves more time than people give it and the Philippines which is left out of the big tourist circuit deserves your time. Stick to the Visayas area and you'll love it. Boracay and palawan are pretty but more expensive and too touristy. Philippines gets my recommendation, even over Thailand. And man do I love Thailand.

There's a hike in Zion park through a canyon river that is just undeniably one of the coolest experiences. Put it on the list.

Cheers Packbacker26. They've just been added! Do you have to go with an official camping company for the Grand Canyon or can you do it Han Solo?

To be honest I did the Grand Canyon with my dad a while back. He arranged everything, it's important to reserve a spot to stay down there, especially Havasupai area ahead of time. But We just hiked in, there's spots to camp halfway and whatnot on the main trails down. I think you just need a permit. It was a long time ago.
