Are you planning to trek the Inca Trail or one of the other alternative treks to Machu Picchu or just wanting to visit MP? I don't know that I would attempt the Inca Trail in January. The last couple of years have been very wet in the area, but weather is all over the place everywhere now.
Hola,
I've read in the past the tracks aren't very safe to do in the winter. I think what we will do is the train instead. I know winter is not the best time to visit but we are keen as we are not sure we will be that close to Machu Picchu again for a number of years.
Would you recommend the train?
Gracias
Yes,you could take the train to Aguas Calientes and visit MP . Take proper rain gear in case it rains. I think for January it is a good idea to build in some extra time in your itinerary so that you give yourselves the opportunity to be flexible in case the weather is bad. But I have been in January and had a great time.
Hola,
That's great. Thank you very much for all your help. We are all pretty excited about seeing MP.
Gracias
Good
Saying the trek isn't safe in January is a bit of an overstatement - accidents are very very uncommon on the Inca Trail as the route is well maintained and the trekking staff are professional. As far as I am aware there have only been two serious accidents on the Inca Trail in the last 3 years (since I have been working in tourism here). In 2010 when there was extreme flooding, part of the Inca Trail collapsed and 2 people lost their lives. This year in January an American tourist slipped and fell and unfortunately also lost her life.
Consdering there are about 60000 people doing the trek a year with about 1000-1500 people a month doing the trail in the wet season, the safety record is good.
The only down side to trekking in the wet season is the views aren't so good and you need to change in to dry clothes at the end of the day - don't let that put you off though as it's a fantastic experience. If you would like more information either send me a private message here or check out my website -snip- and I'll be happy to help.
January is summer in peru
Summer is a concept unknown in Cusco. It's either wet or dry or somewhere in between. If you go by the seasons, Winter in Cusco sees far higher day time temperatures than Summer. Summer is grey and wet a lot of the time.
