India tours and Visa advice - tips please!

I am planning to be in India at the beginning of April. I am a young woman who will be travelling solo so was thinking of doing some kind of tour. One that I have found with STA travel that looks good is the India on a shoestring...http://g.statravel.co.uk/trips/india-on-a-shoestring/AHRH/2013/
It is £699 for this tour. I have been chatting to friends who have been to India who have done this trip on about £100 independently! Because I am travelling alone (although I am sure I will meet people!) I thought it was best to initially join a group? Does anyone know of any similar tours with reputable companies that are a bit cheaper??
Also, can anyone recommend where to obtain a visa from - there seems to be a number of sites. How long does the Visa normally take to obtain?

I think a tour is a good way of maximising your time in India. do some really good ones for under £500; my friend travelled in India with them and recommends them. Also have a look at tours. I took a tour with from Delhi to Kathmandu and it was around £850 for 15 days.

All India visas in the UK are processed by l now. If you submit your application in person it's much quicker than applying by post; I applied at the Manchester office and got my visa in 5 days.

Thank you for your help :-) Will have a good look at those sites and see what offers are available :-)

Hi I have been travelling in oz for past 5 months, and have realised best thing to do is to not plans, when travelling they change so so quick its unreal, so I would advise not booking much or any tours and doing it once your there. also in result of plans changing I have to go home earlier than planned so decided to spend my last 3 months travelling Asia instead, I fly to Kuala Lumpur 13th of march then I have no plans apart from home in June. so as I know I like having 'travel buddies' I don't know if you'd be interested maybe meeting and doing some travelling? I realise how forward, weird and creepy this sounds but last year me and a girl got talking on here, met our first week in oz and have spent past 5 months together aha
Hope to hear back from you,
Alex x

Hi Alex!
Sorry for the delay in reply, for some reason I missed the e-mail notifying me of your thread! Thanks for the advice... I think I have decided to book as I go - the RTW ticket was going to cost as additional £500 for the route I want to go and that excluded a few bits! With tools such as skyscanner etc now, it is really easy to search for the best deals and if you can be flexible, you just fly on the cheapest day! I still have not been able to book my first flight out as I am still trying to sort out work stuff but fingers crossed I will be flying to India mid April and spending about 6 weeks there...then onto Sri Lanka before flying to Bangkok to do Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Singapore....are you heading to those places or are you just completely going with the flow?? If our paths meet at the same time it would be great to meet :-) I am going to try and be as flexible as poss as I know how easy it is to meet people then want to do what there doing! But I want to see so much in a year that I kind of need to roughly stick to time scales although I wont over plan in each place too much!! I hope you have had a fab time in Oz!! Sarah X
Hi Steven! It sounds like I might just miss you if you are going at the end of May...although if my work drag things out it might be a bit later!! Do you have a planned route for when you get there?? Sarah :-)

Hi Sarah,

Welcome to India, if you can share a rough draft of your travel plan, maybe I can be of some help to you. I live in Bangalore and I am a Manager with a IT MNC.

I would suggest not to go with any tour operator as they will always take their cut. I have travelled to more than 2 dozen countries on work/pleasure. And what I have learnt is, it is best to go with the flow with a sharp eye for what the local people have to tell you.

cheers,

Vikas
