India traveling alone

I'm planning to travel to India on my own for the first time in September - I've never really traveled alone before, and haven't been to India either, so I was wondering if anyone had any tips or ideas that might be useful? I'm planning to be away for about two to three months, and have heard that starting in the south and working your way up is a good idea. Any thoughts?

Hii,
Yup India is quiet vast n depends on your choices/preferences?

Hi Elina,

Good to hear that you have chosen to visit our country india....

Starting from south is a good option.. based on your travel interests( Spiritual or adventure or heritage etc ) you can plan your trip.

thanks, I think it'll be both spiritual and adventurous, hoping for a combination of the two I'm not very keen on very big cities, e.g. Mumbai or New Dehli, and want to avoid those if I can but would very much like to go to Jaipur and Varanasi. I'm just so bad at planning anything ahead, but I guess events will unfold once I'm there.

Hi Anile
You can start from either way. I recently visited to Jaipur and it's a awesome place and you can find the many colors of India there. I also recommend to visit Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Agra, Amritsar, Manali, Srinagar in the northern part of India. Here are few tips:
1. At most places there are separate lines and different prices for foreigners.
2. Before you agree to stay, check your room and confirm the price.
3. Book your trains at least two weeks in advance.
4. Shopkeepers will ask you is this is your first visit in India, they are accessing you what to charge.
Hope it helps you

Dear Anile,

India is a beautiful country and has everything to offer. As you are seeking some spiritual experience, my suggestion would be to go to Rishikesh, a small beautifull town located in the foothills of the mighty Himalayas beside the holy river Ganga. It will be a different experience for you. For adventure, apart from regular trekking, hiking and stuff, don't forget to book any of the wildlife tours in India. Nothing beats the experience of watching a tiger in its den. And you can only see them in India.
All the best for your India Trip.

Hi Anile,

The idea of starting from South and working your way up North is perfect considering the time you have chosen for the trip.

Here are few pointers for South India

Kerala(Southern most state of India) - Temples, Palaces, Beaches, Backwaters,Hill Stations, Wildlife Sanctuaries - Pleasant climate, lof ot greenery.
Tamil Nadu - Temples - Not so pleasant climate
Karnataka - Hampi, Jog Falls, Bangalore(for its night life)

cheers,

Vikas
