Thailand June 2013

Pollypoc has indicated that this thread is about Thailand

Hello!

My boyfriend and I spent over a month travelling Thailand last year and had a blast! If you have your wits about you you won't find yourself in an awful story of your own! The country is stunning but with a bad reputation (sometimes deserved, often not).

This was our itinerary:

Bangkok 1 night

Kanchanaburi 3 nights - LOVED this, we were on an all inclusive tour. Erawan falls are stunning.

Bangkok 1 night

Train to Chiang Mai, 4 nights - Jungle Flight is an awesome fun day of zip lining through the jungle

Multiple buses and a ferry to Koh Tao, 4 nights - scuba diving was average, but the island is quiet and beautiful.

Ferry to Koh Samui, 4 nights - a boat tour and hike up Ang Thong Marine Park is stunning and not to be missed!

Ferry and bus and ferry to Koh Lanta, 4 nights

Ferry to Koh Phi Phi, 4 nights - LOVED. Its so peaceful with no vehicles and the diving was awesome

Ferry and bus to Khao Lak, 5 nights - itself can be missed but the tours from there were incredible: similan islands are breath taking and Khao Sok Lake was amazing

Bus and ferry to Koh Phangan, 4 nights - party central

Ferry and bus to Phuket, 2 nights - didn't like Phuket much but we splurged on an incredible hotel for our last days before flying home.

, Overall I highly recommend Kanchanaburi, Koh Phi Phi, Similan islands, Ang Thong, Khao Sok

If booking tours while over there, shop around and bargain and haggle prices. Keep luggage with in your sight on buses and trains (taking only carry on luggage is easy to do and makes life easier in every way and you can relaxed knowing its safe near you at all times)

I've got plenty more info about everything and anything if you want to know more, otherwise have a blast!

Thanks for the reply Megan. Very helpful. Sounds like you both had a busy month
I will look into the places you mentioned, sounds amazing!

Did you book and everything before you went like accommodation, ferrys, tours etc or did you just go with the flow?

Also what type of luggage did you bring with you?
We are really unsure of what type of bag to bring with us and what items to pack.
We plan on doing a lot of travel, but also we will be going onto Oz for a year after our travels in Thailand so we wanna try take as much clothes and belongings as we can.... if it's possible ?

hey, i'm planning on being in thailand on june 14th for a month
i'm doing a group tour for the first week which finishes in Koh Phangan then i'll be island hopping before making my way down to Singapore then going over to Australia as well, do you have a date you're going over to australia? i'll be on my own so looking for travel buddys! x

No worries! It was a fairly relaxed pace we thought, we didn't miss out on doing anything we wanted which is shears good. We had 7 kg each in medium sized back packs (about 40 L I think). Thailand was our last destination too in our 3.5 month journey through SE Asia. I can't stress enough how good it is having as little luggage as possible! Even those days when you're sick of your clothes and how little space is left in your bag, as soon as you have to walk around with it or see others struggling with huge packs or suitcases makes you feel great haha. Although, coming to Aus (we actually live in Melbourne) in June will mean you'll need warm clothes, which makes packing less hard. I'd almost suggest shopping for new clothes and bigger bags at the end of your Thailand trip.

We definitely went with the flow, nothing was booked more than 2 days ahead of time and it was easy. Every now and then we'd have to take a bus instead of a train because it was fully booked but that was the worst problem we ran into with our short planning - not bad at all! The beauty of this was we could stay as long or as little as we wanted in a new place depending on whether we liked it - also good if you happen to get sick, there's no cancellation fees or worry over getting refunds or travelling when you feel disgusting.

For what to pack, in Thailand you shouldn't really need more than 1 jumper and maybe 1 pair pants (if you get cold easy like me or are seeing temples etc). Flip flops are your best friend. One pair walking shoes too. We took tiny microfibre towels for when hotels didn't provide towels - we didn't take a beach towel either. Sometimes we used the hotel towel or a sarong or just laid on the sand! If you get travel sick, take lots of tablets! However the Thailand sickness tablets are cheaper and stronger! Having toilet paper handy is also a life saver at times. We always took the left over paper from our hotel when we left.

if you need any info on Aus let me know! Or if you're coming to Melbourne and need advice or a friendly face! I can't think of anything else helpful right now! Happy to help, I'm a bit jealous now!

@Jenna: Hi Jenna!
Where did you orgainse your group tour and what places will you be stopping at in the week? Sounds fun Have you any idea which Islands you want to visit?
We haven't a set plan yet but hopefully will have something sorted soon I know we plan to spend about a month in Thailand anyway.
What part of australia are you going to? No date set yet but think we are going to start of Brisbane around start of July anyway

@Megan: Thanks so much
Very nervous about having to carry bags around with our belongings But I suppose it's all a part of the adventure :P We will try bring as little as possible.
I have heard there are places over there where you can leave your luggage for the weeks/months you are travelling, will look into that also!

We havn't got anything booked (except our flight and accomm in Bangkok), we are just gonna go with the flow and do up a rough plan of where we would like visit and things we would like to do, and book as we go!
I like the idea of staying as long as we want, where we want ,
without having to worry about rushing things
Will definitely look into the places and things you mentioned in your previous post.

I will be starting my Oz trip off in Brisbane start of July and will be later making my way down to Sydney and then hopefully onto Melbourne around october, so will definitely keep you in mind Thanks again :D

Hey,
Its called Thaintro, it starts in Bangkok and goes down to Koh Phangan, I can't remember the exact itinerary without looking but just google thaintro and it will come up I'll probably visit koh samui, koh phangan, phuket and phi phi, I have no set in stone plan yet, I'll probably decide whilst I'm there. I'm going to Perth first for 2 weeks maybe, then over to Cairns and travel down to Sydney, I plan on being there for about 6 weeks altogether before going onto new zealand.
Where do you want to visit in thailand? x

Well we will be flying out for our next trip to China is September so we won't be able to catch you. planning a rough guide is a great idea! I'm positive everything will go smoothly for you! Have fun!

There are many people who share their experiences on travelblogs.com
