Cambodia- > There is no nationalized railway so easiest and cheapest option is buses which go between majority of cities. I went from Siem Reap-Battambang-Phnom Phenh-Sihanoukville back to PP with no problems. Might not be the best quality but they get you from A-B
Thailand-> buses, flights and ferries. Depending on where you're going but once again, Thailand is easy to get around, very well developed tourist trail. Buses def cheaper than flights.
Vietnam-> has a national rail network and sleeper trains + buses

Plenty of flights between all major cities in SE Asia. Where were you thinking of going exactly?
You have 2 viable options while traveling in VN. bus system or the train. Bus is cheaper, easier to use, the is safer. Or use a combo. Train for overnight, bus for shorter hops. I am assuming you are going from HaNoi to HCMC. talks about our bus ride from HCM to Phnom Penh. Cambodia does not have decent train options. Bus down to Sihanoukville or up to One long day back to BKK. Fly back to VN. Good luck with your planning.

I just finished my three monther on that route and buses are the answer. Unless you're short on time and have a higher budget, then planes could be for you. I never got on a train. I find buses are a great way to meet people going to the same spot.. Make friends on the bus maybe split accomadation save money. Good for solo travelers.
A popular route is. Thailand, into Laos near chiang kong.. Two day slow boat.. Down Laos.. Over to Vietnam/ up a little bit if you want Hanoi.. Down Vietnam into Cambodia..
Vietnam has sleeper buses even for short day transits. Cambodia you are stuck with buses. Laos as well.

1. Is it safe to travel around in Cambodia and Thailand?
2. If I plan to go to bangkok, phuket, chiang mai, pattaya and kho phi phi, Where should I go first? which way is more convenient so that i don't need to travel back and forth ?
3. How long do I need in order to do those places in thailand?

Both countries are pretty safe. Use your common sense. Most get into trouble because of drinking too much, wandering around dodgy areas late at night, being around drugs, renting motorbikes or Many scams in Thailand. are some.

I suggest you either fly to Chiang Mai or overnight bus. If you choose the bus, use the gov't buses that leave from a bus station. The travel shops will try to put you on a private bus. Many reports of theft on these buses. Go to the bus station and use the bus the Thai people use. After you are done with the North of Tland, fly or overnight bus back to BKK. Bus down to Pattaya. 3-4 days in Pat. then BKK. Fly or overnight bus to That is a very pretty part of Tland. Hit , Phi Phi, I would pass on Phuket. Too expensive, crowded. Fly over bus back to BKK.
3. How long do I need in order to do those places in thailand?
Roughly 1 week in the North, 3-4 days in Pat. week down South. 3 weeks, 4 if you have time.

My comment is that you were very very lucky! Buses might be the cheapest upfront, but what if that bus crashes, and you have all those hospital bills (or your relatives have costly funeral bills)? Vietnam is known to have some of the most dangerous roads in Asia, if not in the entire world. The train is far safer, and nothing even compares with the safety of air travel.

Roads deaths in VN are certainly higher than anyone would like. 33/day, over 13K per year. But you have to compare countries on the same scale. Road fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants. And road fatalities per 100,000 motor vehicles (includes motorbikes). On that scale, VN is not even in the same ballgame with many African countries. Check out here.
VietNam: 16 road deaths per 100K people, 60 road deaths per 100K vehicles
Zambia: 35/people, 11,666/vehicles
Liberia: 33/people, 10,966/vehicles
Central African Republic: 32/people, 8,050/vehicles
Mauritania: 35people/ 7,100/vehicles
Train travel is safer, but some places are not accessible via train. Hoi An & DaLat are not served by rail. Road travel is your only option. Good luck touring the Central highlands: Pleiku, Buon Ma Thuot via rail. Same with the delta. After My Tho your only option is the road. Each visitor to VN has to decide what is the best option for them. Perhaps train for long distance, bus when travelling between cities not served by rail.
