Me and my boyfriend are planning to go travelling for a while later on in the year, starting in September in Thailand for 6 weeks, then a week in Tokyo, 12 weeks in Australia, 3-4 weeks in NZ/Fiji.
You're not allowed to work in Australia unless you're there on a visa which allows you to work. The most common way people do this is by getting a Working Holiday Visa, but those are once in a lifetime, so it seems something of a waste to use it when you're only visiting for 12 weeks (though as they only are available until you turn 31, you might as well if you're close to that age).
You'd be arriving in Australia in October/November, which is generally not the best time of the year to be looking for work, as many things slow down before xmas. How easy it is to find work varies a lot from person to person - if you have some in demand skills (IT, nursing, construction) it should be okay, but otherwise you certainly shouldn't base all your plans on the expectation to find something very swiftly.
As for costs; count on an average of AUD $160 per day for the two of you for a private room in a decent hostel, buying and cooking your own supermarket food, travelling by public transport on to the next destination 1-2 times a week, and the occasional entry fee. This can easily double or triple if you go out at night, eat in restaurants, or do a lot of activities.
New Zealand works out a bit cheaper, but mostly because of the much more favourable exchange rate; count on NZD $160 per day for the two of you as well.
Just a quick note about working in Australia: I presume you are coming from the UK, which means you will need to apply for a Working Holiday Visa. Remember that you will only ever be issued a WHV once so if you want to ever spend a year working and travelling in Australia, you might not want to use it up on a 3 month trip.

I think that sounds rather a lot for flights, given the destinations you're going to which are pretty standard for a RTW ticket. Have you tried Trailfinders? I always find them significantly cheaper than anywhere else.
