Okay, so my friend and I are going to be traveling across America for our senior trip. Yes, we know it can be very dangerous, but we're mature about the situation at hand and ready to explore. We're going to have about 6,000$ to spend. We don't plan on spending every night at a motel or hotel, though I know they can be cheap. We have friends to stay with and other things to do. But we decided to put 1000$ aside for gas money just to be sure. Do you think this is too little? We live in South Carolina and was planning to head towards Cali but have places we want to stop by. Towns and big cities in between. Do you know any small town family restraunts to visit on the way? Is there any sites you think we should see? We plan to pack as little as possible. That way we could always stop by a laundromat and wash our clothes. With all of this is mind, do you think we'll have enough money to be gone a month and do you think that we'll make it across America and back on it? Thanks in advance. <3

I will think about places to see, things to do later. I did a quick crunch on driving to Calif and back. Of course it depends on how many MPG you are getting from your vehicle, but driving 7K miles at 25 mpg is under $1K. You should OK on fuel estimates. Good luck with your planning.
Nashville-St Louis-Kansas City-Denver-Salt Lake City-Las Vegas-California
Although being from New Orleans I feel obligated to suggest a route through here. Maybe Atlanta. Through wherever in Alabama/Mississippi. NEW ORLEANS. San Antonio/Austin. BUT then you're stuck driving through New Mexico and Arizona to California which I can tell you from experience(just the opposite direction) is not that exciting of a route. But we were in a hurry and maybe we missed things you can find.
And yeah I think you have enough money for the average persons road trip. And it's America, shouldn't be dangerous.
Here's a few things to see/do on that route:
Nashville--Grand Old Opry, Country Music Hall of Fame, Opryland Hotel, Opryland Amusement Park, The Hermitage, Nashville Pantheon
Memphis--BB King's Music Hall, Graceland (Elvis Presley's former house), Sun Records studio
St. Louis--Memorial Arch
Kansas City--excellent BBQ restaurants (also quite a few of these in Memphis and St. Louis)
Denver--a little known fact about Denver is that it has more microbreweries than any other city in America--so if you want to choose from a vast array of possibilities, then this is your place. Also, the things to see around Denver are right along the roads that head west from here. Either I-70 through Vail or US 40 north to the Rocky Mountains National Park and on to the Dinosaur National Monument and then through Park City are both great routes.
Salt Lake City--main site to see is the Mormon Tabernacle Choir building at Temple Square. If you want to catch a concert, go to the Sunday morning church service
Las Vegas--lots to see, but I recommend the volcano eruption outside the Mirage, the fountains outside the Bellagio, and the boat battle (Pirates vs British Navy) out in front of the Treasure Island resort. Also, see the gondolas traveling through the shops and restaurants at the Venician Hotel.
Los Angeles--besides the beaches and Disneyland, there is also the Getty Museum, Huntington Library and Gardens, and a cruise in Newport Beach harbor. Lastly, consider signing up to get tickets for your favorite live TV show before leaving on your trip. Tickets generally are free--and it is always fun to watch one of these live. Sometimes they even give prizes to the audience (think of shows like "The Price is Right"--although I think they film that in both Los Angeles and Las Vegas, depending on the season). A quick trip to San Diego is also fun--visit "Old Town San Diego" while there, or go to either Sea World or the world famous San Diego Zoo.

Personally I believe you can find at least 5 other spots in California better than LA. Unless you wanna shop and look at expensive cars drive around. San Fransisco is great, Santa Barbara has a great college scene. Excellent house parties. Do some national parks maybe.
