Looking for some advice before I plan to travel America

Hi, I am thinking of going travelling for 6 months. I really want to drive around America and have always wanted to see places such as New Orleans, Nashville, Memphis, South Carolina, but don't really know where to start.

You don't mention your nationality, but chances are you won't be allowed to stay in the USA for 6 months. The regular visa waiver is for 90 days maximum.

As for budget; this varies wildly depending on travel style, but I'd put it at an average of $80/day minimum, for food, transport and accommodation.

Lucy,
I have helped 17 TP members buy vehicles here in Vegas. You will have to apply at your countries US Embassy in order to get a 6 month visa. Anders & Jen, 2 guys from Denmark had a 6 month visa, so it can be done. has a few photos of them. Most members buy a minivan, , or , Big enough 2 can sleep in it, decent gas mileage, easy to drive and easy to sell. You can really save on accomm. costs buy sleeping in a van part of the time. It really comes in handy in our National Parks. Camping is $20/nite, rooms are over $150/nite. You should also look into Free place to stay with someone who knows that city. Great way to help your money go farther.

Good luck with your planning.

Mike, you're a cool guy with a big heart. I hope I have the chance to buy you waaaaay too many cocktails sometime.

Cheers,
Terry

Terry,
I gave up alcohol many years ago, but I will treat you to a free buffet if you get to Vegas. Free show as well! Won't be Celine Dion, but I can always get some show for free. Wait until fall because Vegas has been really HOT!! this last week. We tied our all time high 117 (47) last weekend. I just put up my on Lisa & Simon. They are now into their tenth year riding around the world. Great to see them again. Hope all is well and COOL where you are. Mike

I think you need to provide a little more information about yourself and your interests. What time of year will you travel, and what's your budget? Without knowing your "style", answers would be extremely vague.

Ok I'm sorry about the vagueness of my first post.

I am a 31 year old, British female looking to travel America (would love to go for 6 months but will accept 3 if that's all that is allowed) starting March / April time. I am really in to festivals, theatre, history and in particular the history of music, which is why I am desperate to go to Nashville and my dream is to go to Graceland.

The places I MUST go to are Washington, Atlanta, Charleston, savannah, New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville but would be very grateful for recommendations. I'd also really like to see some of the national parks and anywhere that is not to be missed along the way. I'd love to finish the whole trip off in Vegas, I've been many times and I love it!

I love the idea of a minivan and hadn't thought of this re cutting down accommodation costs, however, is it as easy as having a UK license and buying a motor? (Sorry if that's a really stupid question)

The main help Id like really is planning my route (let's say for 3 months), any tips on places to stay, good deals etc and really any nuggets of information that I may not have thought of!

Thank you in advance.

Hi Lucy

Me and a friend have booked to go in February and are looking into a road trip from ny to south Dakota and back! the car hire is pretty reasonable if you are looking for a small car but I don't know how expensive petrol will be!? we are then planning on taking a bus called the bamba bus which has a very similar route to the one your taking as it goes through Washington, Phili, Nashville, and New Orleans but I think sta travel charge 495 pounds for the bus..... Also mardi gras is 4th March next year and I have heard that it is pretty cool to see in New Orleans.
