New Zealand October-March! !! what to do for Xmas and NY?

Hi I cant seem to find many forums on travelling to New Zealand! I am flying out from Heathrow on 29th September and arriving in Auckland on 2nd October. I have a working holiday visa and my return flight is booked for 6months but I would like to stay longer if possible. I booked three weeks accommodation in Ponsonby, Auckland at a hostel but that's my only planning so far. I think I would like to stay in Auckland for about 3 months to work and then travel the rest of New Zealand for the remainder of my time.

My relatives in southern Auckland spend Christmas Day at Buckland's Beach.

What you do have to watch out with Auckland is their Anniversary (January) when rooms can fill up quickly, and prices rise. This can also happen when big sail races are on from or to the harbour.

But this time of year, accommodation should be OK.

Hi Selina,

I agree, there is very little (forum wise) on NZ. It seems that most people visit Australia for a working holiday visa.

I'm flying to Auckland on 26th August, spending a week there and then off to Fiji for 3 weeks then returning to Auckland. I, also, have a year visa and I have no plans whatsoever. Would be great to chat as I'll be heading back from Fiji as your arriving into Auckland. My Facebook and Twitter are on my profile so feel free to send me a friend request. Would be great to know somebody that is in the same position as me.

Ps, how much money have you manage to save? I've got abou £4000 and hoping that will be enough until I get a job

Jason

Hi Jason, yes I'll find you on Facebook. FIJI sounds great, I really want to go at some point too, you'll have to tell me at some point.

Money wise I'm still saving now, but my goal is to go with £5000 which I will reach if nothing major comes up back home. That's enough to sustain me for a few months if I can't get a job straight away. But I'm hoping it's easy to find one in Auckland.

I've been looking at waiheke island for Christmas and new year, looks really good and I'm guessing it'll have lots of atmosphere. I'll treat myself to my own room for the week perhaps haha

Selina

Yes, that's the usual kiwi thing - a bbq and the beach. Auckland empties a bit at this time of the year; most of the locals head up north or to the Coromandel to spend the festive season at their bach (pronounced batch) - a holiday home by the sea.

However, there are many beaches within Auckland city itself. Cheltenham, Red Beach, Takapuna, Long Bay all up on the North Shore, Piha, Bethell's and Karekare over on the west, St Heliers, Kohimarama and Mission Bay just east of the city, Bucklands Beach, Eastern Beach, Mellons Bay, Cockle Bay and Howick Beach further east and then even further out Beachlands and Maraetai. Many have public barbeques which you can fire up with collected twigs and wood or which are coin-operated gas barbies.

Auckland's not really a cheap place to live for a few months - a beer (500mL) at the pub is around NZD8 or 9 and a meal out is likely to be at least NZD20. Work at a pub or café will earn a minimum wage of NZD14.25.

Hope you enjoy your stay here!
