I want to do some volunteering/visiting to see gorillas or monkeys. I've just started looking and found Uganda has gorilla treks which are quite pricey. Is it worth it? Or is there a cheaper alternative out there? Doesn't have to be Africa.
Thanks for the advice in advance.
For gorillas, Uganda is probably the most popular destination as they have a reliable Mountain Gorilla population as well as English language tourist infrastructure. However, monkeys (much smaller than gorillas of course) can be seen all over the world: Southeast Asia, Central & South America, India, sub-Saharan Africa, some parts of Arabia, etc...
We saw lots of monkeys in Malaysian Borneo - silver Langur monkeys right on the beach in Bako, red Langurs on Mt Kinabalu and howlers and orang utans by the Kinabatangan river. And there's also the sanctuaries for orang utans at Sepilok and Semmengogh. No gorillas though!
I'm happy with orangutans too! Couldn't think of an all encompassing word. (primates? sounds too scientific)
Borneo is on my list at some point too but am definitely check out Uganda, maybe South America. Found inspired challenge -snip- which has a gorilla trek.
Thanks for the advice.
Sorry, forgot about the proboscis monkeys in Bako too.
For Gorillas, check out Rwanda too - they have gorilla tours and they might be cheaper and better than Uganda. My wife is trying to sort a trip out for Christmas 2015 which includes Rwanda's gorillas, Mt Kilimanjaro and Victoria Falls.

Thanks, will do. I've not settled on one place in particular so if its good and a bit cheaper then thats a bonus. Sounds like a great trip!
