I think Bangkok would be better than Singapore as it is a travel hub for many other destinations. You might also want Siem Reap and maybe elsewhere in Cambodia like Phnom Penh. SR is just east of Bangkok. Five days in HCMC will probably be ample unless you are going elsewhere in Vietnam.
You should be aware that Cape Town and Johannesburg are potentially very violent places, where people get held up at gun point, and sometimes killed too. I would avoid them like the plague but I suppose you have some reason for going there?
I see you are missing out South America. Peru is certainly worth a visit.
Asia gets quite hot in March and April. I prefer to be there earlier in the year but obviously you have other destinations to think of.
I currently live in Alaska and have a couple little tips for that part of your journey. Visiting the Alaskan Native Heritage Center and taking a downtown trolley tour are the two things I recommend most often. Many of the cruise excursions are tourist traps and very overpriced, especially the encounters with dogsled teams. The Heritage Center has a dogsled section where you can ride in a sled (or cart in the warmer months) and then play with the dogs and their puppies.
Even though you are taking an Alaskan cruise, I would recommend taking the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to Seward if you have time. It is the Coastal Classic train and is by far the most scenic. From Seward you can take a 6-8 hour boat tour of the wildlife and glaciers for about $120/person. These tours are wonderful. (I recommend Major Marine Tours.) You see whales (humpback and orcas), birds, sea lions, porpoises, many jellyfish, and several glaciers. You can fit all of this into one day and take the train back to Anchorage by 10:20 pm, but it is better to spend a night in Seward before taking the train back.

Cyberia: Yes, we are missing out the entire South America. However, we are saving that continent for another long trip. I agree with you on the temperatures in Asia, but we are also dependent on the temperatures in Kathmandu and Alaska, so I guess we will have to deal with that.
I've had a lot of friends visiting South Africa for both shorter and longer stays. Non of them have ever got into any trouble, so I guess you could do fine as long as you stay in the safe areas.
brittany2025: Great to know about the coastal classic train! Actually there are several Alaska cruises starting from Seward - and now we definitely know how to get between the cities. What time of your would you most recommend to visit Alaska? We are currently thinking May, but we also have a thought of doing the trip later in the year and end up in Alaska during August.
