Hi, I am leaving at the end of this month to travel south east asia for 4 months. I have my hostel booked in bangkok for the first 2 nights and then I want to go up to chiang mai to spend about 5 days. I am wondering whether hostels need to be booked before you arrive in that destination? and also should transport be booked in advance to get to different places, i.e from bangkok to chiang mai? I am travelling thailand, cambodia & vietnam, so would be grateful of any advice?
Leanne,
Wait until you are in Thailand. This is low season and you will not have any problem with rooms or transport. Chiang Mai has heaps of cheap guesthouses, You might get your own room for the cost of a share hostel. Check the 'accommodation' button, top of this page. Plug in Tland, then choose CM. Take a look at what is offered for your dates.
You have several options on getting to CM. Several low cost airlines fly this daily. is one,
is another. You can take an overnight train or bus as well. Many first time visitors to Tland end up in a travel shop and let them handle transport plus your room at the other end. Very convenient, but I suggest you pass if you are talking the bus. Too many reports of theft, problems on these buses. The travel shops put you on the private bus that leaves right from the Khao San Rd area. I would make the effort to get over to the bus station and take the gov't buses that the Thai people ride. I think you will have a better experience. If you choose the private buses, make sure you keep all your valuables hidden under your clothes or in a day bag that never leaves your sight. Don't let a thief ruin your holiday. You will need the or Morchit Bus station for CM.
If you are going to fly some of these segments, I would try to book your flight in advance. You will get a better rate if you give them a week or so notice. The only visa that you need to plan for is VN. You must have your VN visa in hand if you arrive via land. Buy it in Phnom Penh or Sihanoukville if possible. Faster & cheaper than BKK. You can use the VN visa on arrival system if you fly into VN. talks about my experience. Good luck with your planning.
