money on entering Australia

Looking at going to Aus next year but I've read you need so much money when entering.
I know a couple of people that have been with way less and never been asked to prove it.
Does anybody know of anyone that has actually been asked to prove how much money they have when entering Aus or how strict they are?

It's a pretty bad idea to go with less than AUD $5000. They recommend that much money for your own protection, as virtually every single backpacker to Australia needs at least that much. Australia is not a cheap destination.
Even if you find work right away (unlikely), it'll still take time before you get paid for the first time.

The above taken into account: No one who has ever reported about it here on the forum (myself included) has been asked to show proof of funds when entering Australia.

HI member!
You can come to Vietnam. If you save, you can live 6 months.
Are you gifted teacher? you can do english teacher.

It's a myth! I wasn't stopped and never heard of anyone been stopped.. I was panicking as well as I'd heard this rumour and I second Sander.. Australia is expensive!

I don't think AUD 5000 is alot and can easily be saved up within a year. I would be too scared to go with less than that amount.
