A laptop is always useful in the journey. We can use it to backup our photos, share them to social networking sites. But the weight of a laptop is always a problem. How do you think of using a iPad + wireless disk to replace the laptop? This solution will be much lighter.
If you're only backing up photos and posting to Facebook and doing email and simple browsing then a laptop is of course complete overkill. There's lots of small/cheap options to achieve those tasks.

Yeah I certainly agree with the others, bringing a laptop isn't too necessary but it depends on what you're using it for. It also depends on how big the laptop is, if it's only one of the small 10'' or 11'' then that's still easy to take. I personally bring an iPad when I travel because I just use it for some research around the area I'm in or just for some entertainment during down time.
If you are traveling than there is no need carrying one, because it is of no use, because of its size difficult to carry and then you have to be extra careful with it you might misplace it or may be some one steals it. Instead it would be better to carry a smart phone or tab.

Not always true, avneet. There are some travellers (like me) who require the processing power of a high end laptop/ultrabook. Video editing, etc. can't be done on a smartphone or ordinary tablet.
