Very flexible with dates; could go tomorrow if I wanted to (although I would prefer time to pack!), would like to leave by December 2014 at the latest.
Regardless of the length of your trip you should budget at least $80 per day. That's being fairly conservative with accommodation, making your own meals, and low budget activities.

I'm living in Melbourne at the moment (from the uk though) but looking to head to Cairns and to do a tour of the whitsundays/Fraser island etc for last few days of oct/beginning of nov so if that's something you're interested in, let me know

You sound very flexible... But, $1,000/month will not go far.... can I ask a question...... Are you looking for the city backpacker nightlife scene or the outback and miles of road, empty beaches, swimming holes and interesting exotic places to visit.......

The last couple weeks I traveled to/from Cairns to Alice Springs (home) with a Belgian Gum-tree ride-share. (good fun and easy going travel companion). We drove along the Savannah way, the most northerly east/west road across Queensland. It's a hard sandy road/track shaded by tall tropical eucalyptus. Hundreds of cheeky kangaroos sitting on the side of the road, precariously straight up, not bothered. Came across pairs of jabirus dancing with their large wide wings open at each other. Driving with good music great company a smile with tears running down my face...... We stopped at old bush pubs, joined in with the locals. Camped in two little tents at parks. Visited lots of interesting places..........
