Millitary rules in Thailand now.
There was 2 travellers killed in one of the island.
Some think it is safer now than before military takeover.
(Murders even occur in Indonesia too!)
For a big tall white guy I feel safer in Thailand than when I was in Indonesia. In 2013 Indonesia had just under 9 million tourists. Thailand had over 23 million tourists.
Tourists arrive every day of the year, just like before.

There may be a break in this case.
The British couple killed made it 11 British people killed in Thailand in nearly six years. Some 800,000 British people go to Thailand each month, so not exactly a murder hotspot.
As to Indonesia:
For 2013, there were 13,440 violent crimes reported: 105 murders; 70 rapes; 2,249 aggravated assaults; 101 kidnappings; 5,805 burglaries; 1,440 thefts; and 3,670 vehicle thefts.
I know where I'd feel safest, and 10 weeks from today I shall be in Bangkok.
