I did this a couple of years ago without a company, just booked it all myself. It meant I could stop where I wanted when I wanted. I saw the tour companies and would be my worst nightmare, herded onto a coach to stop at places which the company wanted to stop at. Kinda looses the magus of Route 66 if you ask me.
Get a good guide book, a sat nav for your exact location (but not to use to guide you) and a map and you'll be fine!
