Ways to stay and live in Germany without working/studying?

I'm a US citizen planning on moving to Germany to live with my boyfriend (who lives in and is a German citizen). I plan on studying there, but I'd like to live there for a year off free time before diving into school. Many residency permits and long-term visas I've seen require me to have proof of studying or working..

After completing your graduation you can get offer to apply the job and you are allowed to stay there on certain condition. Even during your studentship you can have job after registration and completing other procedures. It is hard to stay there without associating yourself in any institution.

very interesting that they require that from someone who possibly have money to live for one year without work (US citizen)
this is not Russia or Thailand....

My question is - is there anyway to live in Germany for a long period of time without employment or a university?

There are very few countries that allow a foreigner to just show and stay as long as they want to. A US citizen can visit Germany as a tourist for 90 days.

Cheers,
