Hi guys! Planning a trip to borneo to do some diving in sipadan and then check out rainforest / orangutans in sandakan before heading to kota kinabalu to climb the mountain.. Please let me know good places to stay as well as things to see / do
Hi - no idea of your budget but if you're travelling cheap, Sandakan Backpackers is a good place to stay in the centre of the city; clean and cheap. A brilliant detour would be a couple of nights on the Kinabatangan River. Staying in a forest lodge with morning and evening trips down the river and walks into the bush, all with the potential to spot wild orang utans, pygmy elephants, crocodiles and loads of birds. For the climb, we stayed at the Grace Hostel for a night and then at Laban Rata just before the peak. We saw a wonderful sunset at Laban Rata but it rained the following morning and we peaked at 6am in the rain with nothing to see but clouds. Then it rained for the full duration of the descent (late December 2012). Enjoy Borneo!
