Hey all... My girlfriend and I are going to South America arriving from Auckland (rtw ticket starting from uk) into Santiago. We are after a few hints from you helpful bunch! Plan so far is chile - Argentina - Bolivia - Peru - equator (possibly) - Columbia - Venezuela (not sure about) - Brazil.
Hi - we did this eighteen months ago for eight weeks. We flew into Santiago and then straight to Calamaby domestic flight and a bus to San Pedro de Atacama. Three nights there and then a 4x4 trip across the salt flats of Bolivia to Uyuni and a bus ride to Potosi and down the mine. An overnight bus to La Paz and a flight to Rurrenebaque for three nights in the Amazon jungle and pampas and then a flight back to La Paz for four nights there (including a brilliant football match). Then a bus to Copacabana and a boat over to the Isla del Sol and then back and then a coach into Peru with a stop at Puno for the floating islands before arriving at Arequipa and then straight on to Cabanaconde for a hike down the Colca Canyon. A bus back to Arequipa for a night and then an overnight bus to Cusco and the four day inca trail to Machu Picchu and a bit of a rest in Cusco. Then an overnight bus to Nazca, a quick flight over the Nazca Lines and then another bus up to Lima for four nights. A flight to Quito for four nights and then on to the Galapagos Islands via Guayaquil for eight nights, staying on different islands and getting around by ferry. Then back via Guayaquil and Santiago to Auckland. It was brilliant!
If you're flying by LAN, you might be able to get a LAN South America pass which allows you internal flights really cheap (Quito to Galapagos to Guayaquil for less then USD150 each in January). We used Cruz del Sur coaches for most overnight trips - a little more in cost than others but very safety conscious and great to get some sleep on before another day sightseeing.
Enjoy your planning!
