The first thing I would do is get a map and route all the cities you are interested in visiting, research each city for cost of living expenses (this will give you an idea of how much you need to save), decide on whether you are going to take odd jobs or just travel

Hi Micaela, congratulations on making the decision to travel. I looked at your travel map from the earlier post and yea, to much travel time doesn't leave you enough "do-ing" time once you get to a place.
Ya' know? If you don't have a passport, you can get one and start considering other places. I know you want to see your own country and I totally get that. I understand why you would want that. But let's just say you decided to make a road trip to Alaska part of the trip. You'd need a Passport to drive through Canada. And a passport may come in handy later if you decide to go elsewhere on down the road.
Personally, I've found that the west coast of the U.S. has a lot to offer. From San Fran northward to Canada is beautiful forest, mountains to ski, waterfalls abound and skipping over to the coast for a peak at the ocean or to learn how to surf is a short drive from anywhere.
Speaking of driving. If you could work it in your budget, flying to a destination - say San Fran - then renting a car for a few days/week...it could save you 3-4 days of lots of boring driving eating up your vacation time.
Downside - you'd need someone over 25 to rent the car so you may need to find another fellow traveler for those times. IDK, might be to much to hassle with...just throwing it out there.
Start checking out the local Craigslist of the areas you're interested in. You could find a "Rideshare" in that area or cheap place to stay a few nights. Also, I've heard of a site...I think it's called "couchsurfing"...or something like it. But as the name implies you sleep on someone's couch. Check out a site called airbnb dot com. It's a worldwide site and I've come across some pricy bed and breakfasts on there but I've also found a few deals. I've never used them as of yet but I travel a lot and I may look more into it in the future.
Also, don't forget that since you're doing a U.S. trip, you could technically work your way across the country. I mean you could get to an area, find reasonable accommodation, get a job (think temp services) and make a few bucks/meet some people and continue after a few weeks or a month or so.
As for reasonable accommodation, some of the places you're thinking about may have a "hostel" in the area. A hostel will also have a "community board" with job listings, cars for sale, accommodations in the area etc...and lots of other fellow travelers to meet. Search online for "Hostelling International". Say you're in FL, IDK lets say Miami, if you find a room in a hostel for $10-15 bucks a night, get a job temping someplace counting widgets or something. You see the area on your days off or work 2 weeks and site see the area for a week before you leave to the next place.
As someone else suggested, get a map of every area. Keep the map. Study the map. Google maps/internet stuff is great. I use them frequently for many things. You may know but with googlemaps you can zoom in on an area and scroll around looking for different hotels/restaurants/markets etc...BUT keep a paper copy of the map with you physically because when the world comes to an end and the zombies take over, there will be no electricity thus no internet and you'll be glad you've got a hard copy of that map.
Didn't I read that you only had 3 months for the trip? With that little time for the trip, some of this may not be doable but I"m just throwing it out there. Maybe before the time for the trip gets here, you'll have found more time and can take 6 months for it. A year would be great!

What a remarkable trip that you have planned. It looks like you will be hitting 48 states, if I read your map correctly. You may need a lot of time to cover a trip this size, but it sure is possible. You are young and off to a great start. I once traveled across the USA by car for about a month which was a great trip, but nothing as ambitious as your trip. I wish you all the best.
Thanks Robmer! It is a great map, though it's not mine. Some really smart scientists designed it haha. I bet it would take at least a year to really enjoy it.

Hey! We are hiring a car from chicago and driving all the way to san fran. We plan on stopping of and seeing... Rapid city (mount rushmore & crazy horse) Yellow stone national park, salt lake city, yosemite national park and then over to san fran.We plan on doing this in 9 days starting this friday (15th) till the 24th.
