Yes I was there in July-August 1990 for a trip from Mexico-City to Cancun through Chiapas, Guatemala and Yucatan. Everything was going fine ... until we had this Hurricane Diana in August !
It came when I was I Tulum on the Atlantic coast in Quintana Roo. And there you have nothing to do except waiting. It took 2 days to go away. It killed about 100 people and caused a lot of damages (30 000 people homeless).
So take care of the hurricanes season!
