If hiking the (classic) inca trail is on your wishlist, you unfortunately can't take a laid-back approach to that and just see how timing works out. Spaces are strictly limited, and for a departure in April/May, you should book absolutely no later than January. (Possibly even earlier; I haven't looked into this in a couple of years now.)
Totally worth it, though, and just something you need to take into account with other travel plans. Also be sure to get enough altitude acclimatization well before you start out on the trail!
