What are the chances of me encountering an extremely massive spider in Aus?
Mate, I've spent the last 4 months traveling and working in Aus and I've not seen any large spiders or snakes. This is even with camping in national parks in a tent. It's a lot harder to bump into them than you'd imagine. You're more likely to get injured by hitting a kangaroo or wombat with your car. Just come and see this country - there's nothing to be scared of as long as you take the normal precautions that you would anywhere else.

I agree with the previous poster - I spent 3 months travelling around Australia and never saw a large spider.
Spent a year there, and went back twice for a month each time, and never saw any. (Not counting the gorgeous golden orb weavers in the Sydney Botanic Gardens, which I must've spent an hour photographing; but although those are larger than what I tend to see here at home, I'd say they're far from "large", nor in any way dangerous.)
