Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice. Next year I'm off to Australia for a year (possibly longer). I'm 30 next December so I'm going to apply for the Working Holiday Visa and head out there. If I like it then I'll complete agricultural work and apply for the second year visa (will apply while I'm 30). I just want some advice though on what to do during the year? I was planning on flying into Cairns and working my way down the east coast and then going across to Perth. I want to see all of Australia. I was planning on going out there with about £6,000. I was thinking of doing one of those one week programme things where you're with a group and you get an introduction to Australia etc, a couple of nights out and some activities so that I can get to know some people...can anyone recommend a decent one of these programmes? Where would be the best place for me to find work? Basically I just want as much advice as possible as I want to make the most of my year!
Hey James!
I recommend getting to know people through work exchanges. I think the one week programme is absurdly expensive and only introduces you to other brand-new travelers (vs. locals who are connected to people who need workers).
-snip-.
Best places to find work, I think, are word of mouth. Yes, there are websites that post up backpacker jobs. You can also go to temp agencies. I did some freight handling work in Perth. But, there are lots of unexpected barriers to getting work on a WHV - -snip-.
I did like -snip- as far as not being full of stuff that's already on seek and indeed (the two biggest Australian job sites). You can also look on gumtree. Hope that helps!!
Hi James!
I'm the same as you - 30 years old & just going out on the WHV.
I have booked on to one of the weeks activity things. It is a lot of money. However, it's a long old flight out there, a dose of jet lag when you arrive and then you're on your own! I think if you're braver than me you might not need to do it, but I'm looking forward to some friendly faces in the same situation, and getting out and about rather sitting in Macdonalds using the free wifi and trying to think about what to do next.
With regards to how easy it is to find work, I've got no idea until I get there!
Hope that helps
