Those Monday morning thoughts about travel sound familiar!
I'd want something that I could grow attached to throughout the trip, something cool and probably brightly coloured. If I was doing it with someone, a VW combi van would be a fun choice and would provide sleeping space in the back. If I was alone, something dinky like a VW Polo.
Oooh a Polo would be good.
Was working on a Peugeot 106 the other day and thought to myself, "I think I could fix this in the middle of a desert or jungle"

It would probably depends on how many people are joining in for the trip, how much luggage, what sort of terrain it should be fit for, and so on. No matter the brand, it would have to be a car that we're familiar with.

A motorbike would be your best choice. They are better at negotiating many of the world's bad roads. You can get to a lot of places where cars can't. There's an additional advantage. There are lots of repair shops and parts available. And, if you have to, you can ship it at considerably less cost than a car. So, yes, think small. But instead of a car, consider a motorbike.
I disagree Berner. Unless the traveller is a very experienced motorcyclist then it's the worse choice possible for transport in foreign countries.
