i've not been but i'm sure others will help, but i do know that Japan is 1 of, if not the most expensive place to visit. But if you could give people a rough idea of your budget it will help
i have looked at doing Japan for a week when i go travelling next year (first stop indonesia) but for a week its too much from my budget and so i will go there some other time in life i hope
You can find some cheap hostels in the bigger cities, but transport is expensive in japan from what i have checked
Its nice that you want to travel outside of your home country and to see other cultures though, but you have many places you can visit and for less money if your budget cant take you to Japan

Yes, Japan can be expensive, especially compared to other Asian countries. Do not expect cheap and budget accommodation like other places - Japan is a strong economy and even in the sub-5000yen market places can be hard to find.
Food can be more affordable, but travelling around (long distances) will take money. Big cities are more expensive, less-traveled places are cheaper.
Do you actually have a realistic budget, or are you hoping it really is possible to visit Japan on USD20/day? (picking a nominally silly small value).
Actually, i have buddies at tokyo, he said "dont worry about the hotel and food" yeah. It possible i cant travel in this town a few years again.... #LOL

Oh that's not too bad then. I would just save as much as you can and in sure you will have a good time with whatever you can afford to do
