Bike Riding Great Wall

I know there are a lot of package tours for bike-riding the Great Wall of China, but I was wondering if anyone had done it independently? Or, if you have done a package tour, was it worth it?/could you do it without a guide?
Cheers!

Someone did on a unicycle so it must be possible-how's your Mandarin?

Presently non-existent. But I suppose that's true, I'll see if I can find myself the route he/she followed (thank you, that's actually quite valuable information!)

No one unicycled the great Wall of China. They rode along a very tiny section where the tourists go, that's all.

The Wall extends for almost 9,000 km along the southern edge of Inner Mongolia. The vast majority of the Wall doesn't even exist anymore - only a minuscule fraction is the classic, "Great Wall of China" what you see in the usual photos.

It wouldn't be that difficult to ride part of the Wall yourself, but I'm not sure what advantage there is to that. The bike tours are easy and hassle free to arrange and they're not that expensive.

Have fun with your research.

Cheers,
Terry

Hi Emotton,

Terry is right, there is not much sense to go biking at the great wall. You will be better off climbing, trekking along a non-restored or less touristy section of the wall.

In general, travelling on a bicycle in china is one of the best travel experiences you can have. But as there is no road running next to the wall (it's a defense wall built on the very steep edge of mountain ranges), it is almost pointless to consider it.

Let me know if you are seriously interested in a bicycle travel in china - i am very happy to give you more advice.

Happy travels!
