A hypothetical 'average' backpacker could be expected to spend about AUD $60/day when staying in small dorms in decent quality hostels, buying food at the supermarket and cooking their own meals, travelling by public transport from destination to destination about once a week, and doing maybe one not-too-expensive activity per week (so things like skydiving wouldn't be included in that budget). Going out every so often, eating in restaurants every so often, or doing more and more expensive activities would quickly double that budget, and it's not unknown for people to blow through $150-$200 per day when they're not watching their budget.
A few hardy folks manage to make do with $50/day or less by living extremely frugally, but they're the exception.
So a six month stay: do the math.
