We are three girl friends (40+) looking for a charming island not too far away from Pireus to avoid spending too much time travelling. Somewhere to relax in the sun a week this summer before going back to the stress at work. Any good ideas?
You could take the overnight ferry to Iraklion, on Crete. I went there last year, and really enjoyed it. Crete is a big island, with lots to explore (beaches, canyons, mountains and small villages). A great place to go cycling. The small city of Iraklion has an old Venetian harbor, and lots of small cafes and restaurants serving souvlaki, etc., especially around the central square.
You probably wouldn't be interested, if you're just looking to relax, but the ruins of the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos (where the legend of the Minotaur started) is about 20 minutes by bus from Iraklion. It's worth a look, if you go to Crete.
Thank you for the reply. I agree that Crete is a great place. I have been there a couple of times and enjoyed Knossos as well. Especially I enjoyed going around in the small villages by car. Crete in spring was particularly beautiful.
I really liked Santorini and Mykonos. both are have very beautiful views and some nice beaches and excuse me for being sexist but both places have great shopping. Mykonos has many great places to buy jewelry made in the greek style. Santorini has such great cliff views of the sea and souring area along with shops and places to eat making it another great place to visit. The best thing to do is look at each place and see which place has the most of what you are looking for and go there.
Dear Mark. Thank you very much for your answer. The islands you propose sound very interesting. I am trying to combine the vacation with one friend who will be going either directly to or from Sicily in one end of the vacation so its a bit diffcult but I hope we will succeed.
Santorini and Mykonos are quite well-known islands. I will find a map to see their location. Very interesting places I think. Thanks and good night from Oslo (10 to midnight here now).
