Hello everyone!
There are a few places to drop in on the way down south but 4-5 weeks is a bit long. Have you considered maybe a week or so in New Zealand? Sydney to Auckland is only about 2/3 of the distance from Perth to Cairns.
Tasmania is only a short hop from Melbourne. Flights are usually cheaper if booked outside Australia.
You could go in January and get swamped by the crowds. November should be OK. Not too hot.
After leaving Melbourne planning on doing NZ for a month then onto either Fiji or the Cook Island for 2 weeks before heading home...
Is there much to do between Brisbane and Sydney? Would you recommend getting a flight from here?
I'd say 4-5 weeks is about right to do the East Coast, but it depends what you plan on doing. By the time you spend 5 days in Cairns, 5 days in the Whitsundays and 5 days on Fraser Island and 5 days in Sydney you're almost up to 3 weeks already. I guess if you just want to travel the east coast then it'll be too long and Tasmania would be a good option.
Im going mid October to mid December 2011 and plan on doing as much as appeals to me from Tasmania to Cairns. I hope to avoid an itinerary that is too rushed - I want to take my time and really EXPERIENCE Oz. My friends that have done this trip before say you can do a lot in 2 months, but you cant possibly do everything.
