Hi guys
Hey there,
When were you thinking of travelling? Im going to SA starting off in Rio in November for 4 months......

In my opinion you're going about this in exactly the opposite way that makes sense.
1.) Do NOT put Travel Buddies at the top of your list. 2.) Do NOT base your trip planning around the opinions of other potential travel partners who are complete strangers to you. 3.) Looking for Travel Buddies when you have zero travel plans yourself is a recipe for disaster.
Do some research and decide where you want to go. With no travel experience there are several areas that would work very well for you, for example SE Asia. 1.) It's very inexpensive. 2.) It has excellent backpacker travel support and infrastructure. 3.) Even through it's very travel friendly it's still a completely foreign culture. 4.) It has LOADS of other foreign backpackers so it's super easy to meet other people.
Get researching. Make a plan. Do it. Everything else will fall into place.
Have fun.
Cheers,
Terry
i'm going to se asia for august if you wanted to try that as a starting point? I been travelling a few times before and its amazing - scarey but great. when I went to places like oz which are more expensive I did helpx -ing I got to go riding in the outback and work in a zoo = was all great and cheaper than living in backpackers places!
so my advice - just do it. it will be scarey and maybe even lonely sometimes but it will be amazing!
There is absolutely no reason to be lonely if you choose the right destination.
Nervous travellers or first timers with little travel experience simply have to do a tiny bit of research and choose destinations that have excellent backpacker infrastructure - this makes it dead easy to meet other travellers.
Lots of backpackers spend MONTHS on road and (unfortunately, in my opinion) interact 90% of the time with other foreigners.
Cheers,
Terry
Hi Emily, i am in a similar situation. 24 and stuck in a bit of a rut! I am thinking of going to Australia in August this year for maybe 6 months or so. I'm looking for a travel buddy too as i dont really wanna go on my own! i think australia is a good place to go as loads of people go backpacking there and it looks like a very sunny, fun place to be!
Emily, how can you be afraid of being alone in a developed country that speaks English? Its culture isn't foreign to you. It also has a very extensive network of youth hostels with loads and loads of visitors just like you. There's nothing inherently "foreign" about Australia compared to where you're living right now.
I don't understand how that can be scary... would you be nervous about travelling through the UK too?
Cheers,
Terry
Am in a similar poition, 24, need a chnage of scenery, culture, people!
i think SE Asia is agood place to go,cheap, loads of other travellers, diff. culture
maybe also NZ, or Oz?
Looks like if i do go which i really should, it will be solo!
get a one way ticket there book a few days accomodation, and go from there?
ovcourse will be a bit daunting, but like Barry said would you be scared to go from one end of the UK to the other, i think prob. not!
i know a lot of people are meeting in thailand 10-14 sept for full moon party
cheers morgan
Traveling alone is not bad.
I do it all the time, and I get to know people in the hostels and with couchsurfing.
Actually the couchsurfing project is a good place to look for travel buddys!
I'm heading to the USA in August if anyone's keen ?
