I'm applying for a Work and Holiday Visa for Australia and was wondering how strict immigration is about the $5000 you're supposed to have in your bank account prior to leaving. I'll probably only be taking about $1500 with me, and a one-way ticket, because I'm planning to move with my boyfriend right off the bat- I'm not really going for a holiday, but to work and live with him until we get engaged and move to the next visa process.
Why dont you just tell immigraton the truth. Once your holiday work visa has expired and if you are engaged or even married by then to a citizen, you still might have to wait two years before you can work again in the country. Its so they know ligit.
Also I cant see why your BF cant give you the 5k. Its just for immigration to see you do have access to funds and can support yourself if needed.
If he tells immigration your his GF and you are staying with him and he can support your visit, its probably ok.

But thanks for the advice- my bf definitely has the money to support my visit, so if anything happens, I'll make sure to have his information and everything as backup
I moved from Australia to the UK and I did not have the funds so my mother transfered them across, I got a statement and transfered them back, all they chack is that the money is there, they do not care where it came from.
You MUST have the funds at the time of aplication and they must be in YOUR account. Him saying he will support you is not good enough because god forbid you break up and you are stranded in Aus(The visa board would see it that way)
Make sure the statement its self is official. Have it stamped and signed by the bank, because they WILL reject your aplication on that.

SymEC1: You wrote you moved to the UK from Australia. Which is the opposite situation from what's being asked here. Australian immigration is way more relaxed than UK immigration (backpackers are considered "low risk"), and doesn't do any checking at all, as far as anyone has ever reported about it here on the forum.

I'm not gonna say you will be 100 % OK because we can never make that assumption, however i know at least 50 people who have travelled to Australia on a WHV and have never heard of any of them being asked to provide proof of funds.
That said, i myself didn't have the required amount after blowing a massive amount of budget staying in Asia for 2 years rather than my planned 9 months, i simply got my brother to transfer money into my account and i transfered it back to him a few days later.
I also was not asked for proof of funds, really the best option would be to borrow the money if you can and the transfer it back to the person after entry, more of a security option.

Well, I already applied for my Visa last night and they ask for no proof of the funds, it was just a check box. Last night I extensively searched the forum (and saw plenty of posts from you, Sander ) where HUNDREDS of people said they never check for this information. Perhaps they are more strict in the UK, but it looks as though they won't be in Australia. Not very worried about it anymore
And at any rate, I'll have enough money to fly home should we break up...not worried about that either I may, just as a precaution, have him transfer the money before I leave so I won't have any grief at customs, should I be the one and only person they decide to check, but I feel like it'll all be fine
