i've got a pretty good idea of the spots along the way i want to visit as this is a bit of a trial run starting in mid september. i'm curious as to the best way to go about transportation to see the some sites along the way. bus? train? or hire a driver? i'm not completely broke and want to be sure and get a feel for the area because i'll actually be returning just a month or two later and want to then have an idea of where to spend that time.
Thailand buses are cheap, reliable and pretty comfortable but will obviously only get you from A to B. There's a good network that will get you to most towns. The trains are cheap and pretty comfortable but not as reliable. The network is also a little limited. I have hired a driver before but it was kind of expensive and the drivers are not good at English. This could be a problem if you want them to take you around the sights off the beaten track. Personally, I would use the train and bus to get to my destination and then use a tuktuk, tri-shaw or motorbike taxi (you can even hire a motorbike) to then investigate the area.
