Hey guys, im planning to leave for a trip around Europe in May and was wondering if around 6 months will be too long. I wont be looking for work, it will be strictly travelling. I want to hit most of the major cities as well as must see places. I have around 15k so money isnt too much of an issue. I've been reading through posts on here and it seem that most people tend to travel around Europe in much shorter time-frames.
Where are you from? Do you need a Schengen visa or are you from a country whose citizens get 90 days without a visa? 15K in which currency? Euro? British Pound?
Your answers to these questions are important.
Generally Europe is backpacker friendly, and if you don't need a Schengen visa you can travel for up to 90 days in the whole of the Schengen area, then spend 90 days outside ( Uk, Ireland, Croatia for ex.).
If you need to apply for a Schengen visa, you'll have to give a detailed itinerary in order to get one.
If your 15 K are Euro or even better £, you'll have enough money for a nice time.
Language barriers: English is widely spoken in the the touristy places in Europe. If you plan to spend more time off the beaten path, you'll need some knowledge of the local language, or at least a very good guide book with the main phrases.
Thanks for the reply. Sorry, i forgot to state that im a UK resident and i will be travelling with £15K.
As im from the UK i will not need a Schengen visa, but i was unaware i only could only spend 90 days in the Schengen area. Will boarder hoping to Croatia for example, restart my 90 days on re-entry or do i have to spend a certain amount of time outside the Schengen area.
If these questions are best directed in a different section then let me know. I had a quick look through the visa section but couldnt find any info or re-entry after the 90 days period so thought i might get a better answer here.
UK resident with a UK passport? Or with a passport from another country?
If you are a British citizen, you can forget all about Schengen. As a citizen of the EU, you can stay anywhere in the EU and Schengen as long as you want, provided you have enough money. With 15 k in £ I see no problem there.
There is no need to prebook, unless you want to be somewhere when there's a major festival like Oktoberfest in Munich for ex.
I'm sure you'll have a great trip.
Just book a flight, book into a hostel and go with the flow. I am English and 'did Europe' last summer. Admittedly on a much tighter (2 month) schedule, but it was great and given more time I would pack in about 10 more countries and probably live in the better places for 2 or 3 weeks. If you stay in hostels and make friends with fellow travellers you will find loads of opportunities such as work and going to other parts of countries/Europe.
I met a group of students from England going around Europe by train and when we told them we were going by car they thought that was a much better way of doing it. The train network is massive but it doesn't go to the more off the beaten track type places (which tend to be the best places), but hitch hiking is always an option, everyone is so friendly you'll get picked up with hardly any waiting around.
Money wise you are sorted wit 15K, even for 6 months. I spent 2k in 2 months! That being said some of the cheaper countries (Eastern ones like Hungary, Slovakia etc) are great, just because you can eat in restaurants, stay in posher hostels/hotels and not spend half as much as you would in say Italy. Hope this helps, Adam.
