Crossing the Myanmar - Laos - Cambodia border

Is it possible to do that without taking flights?
Thanks

Where are you starting from?

From Thailand you can go overland to Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia. At Chiang Rai (Thailand) tourists go over the border with Myanmar but usually just to get a visa stamp in and out then return to Thailand. (Border run.) From Thailand you can use bus or train through Malaysia and on to Singapore too.

What are you trying to do?

Remember these countries have various visa requirements depending on the passport you travel under. .

Thanks Karazyal!
I'm planning to take the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Yangon. I'm thinking to skip Thailand but will consider if it is necessary as a "bridge" to cross from Myanmar to Laos.
I'm one of the SEA members, so visa wise is not a big issue.
But based on what you've said here, it seems like it is not possible to do that.
Any further advice?
Thank you very much.

You must fly into Myanmar - as Karazyal says, you can cross over by land to do a border run from Thailand but you won't be able to get any further. You're likely to get the cheapest prices into Yangon (with Air Asia), but it's possible to fly into Mandalay too. Bagan Air are a decent, privately run airline if you want to take any domestic flights.

There are no ATMs in Myanmar and as far as I know credit cards are still not accepted, so make sure you take plenty of US$ cash with you. The local currently, Kyat, can be obtained from money changers on the street once you're in the country; don't use the ones at the airport as the rate is notoriously poor.

Thank you very much bex76!

No problem.

You can use Kyat for smaller purchases such as snacks and water, but most places would rather take $US for larger purchases. Let me know if you need any more info regarding Myanmar or elsewhere in SE Asia.
