first timer in bangkok, looking for lodging. not looking for super expensive, but don't mind a few extra bucks to avoid the backpacker hostels. though i'm sure some are quite ok, i'm looking for a spot located to see bangkok and have a decent room.
What is your "range", so that we might find the middle?
Not everyone has the same the same definition for mid range. How much per night do you want to spend on a room? Are you a male or a female? Why? Because many men wouldn't care if the hotel was near nightlife - some might even prefer it!
Nana Ibis. Too expensive or too cheap - up to you! Walk to restaurants, malls, nightlife and even supermarkets. You can walk to the Skytrain service too. (Cheaper and more expensive hotels also available in this Nana area.)

Stay in Buddy Lodge on Khao San road. Been there many times and its by far the nicest down Khao San

oh right, what does mid range mean. shoot….places are pretty cheap i gather. $20 - $40??
Try the Baan Dinso Boutique Hostel - not a hostel in the traditional sense. All private rooms ensuite and shared baths available. I was very impressed with the shared bath - clean enough to eat off of that sparkling floor. Wonderful people run this little place. Located a short walk to Khao San Road.
Travelling around Bangkok is pretty easy nowadays with the BTS and underground, so you could pretty much stay anywhere. How much per night are you willing to pay, how long are you staying in Bangkok for (maybe you can get a deal) and what kind of sights / experience do you want?
