Picking the right GPS

Hello
My buddy and I have planned to attempt to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail this June, and I am not sure on what is the best way to navigate.
I am thinking about getting a GPS but am not sure on which brands or what types to pick. I am clueless actually. I was planning on just getting maps and guidebooks but there are none for people going Southbound on the trail. Can anyone give me tips on the best way to navigate through a trail like the Pacific Crest? Or do I even need to worry? How difficult is it to navigate through the Crest? Are the footpaths hard to locate?

I've used a for the last 4 years. looking at the site it seems to be discontinued now. But something similar is available or you could probably find one really cheap on Ebay. The gps doesnt come with any maps, so you have to load your own from either payed services or Ive found this site to be all you need for very detailed trails. . Its a bit of a learning curve to figure out how to load the maps, but once you get it sorted it's a great device for traveling.
