Down south is mainly beach holidays.
In Chiang Mai you can book tours up into the hills and mountains and further north to Chiang Rai, etc. It will be cooler, as in just hot, up north.
From Bangkok there are a number of places not too far away which are worth a day or more visit like Ayutthaya, River Kwai, Kanchanaburi, Sukhothai, etc. Plenty of travel agents.
Check out my review of Thailand under my profile.
The parts about Chaing Mai would be really helpful.

I would add the Palaces in Bangkok... and ride the water buses on the Klongs (canals).
You can get off at the www.jimthompsonhouse.com for BEAUTIFUL stuff and his home complex.
On the way to the train station ...on the way to Ranchanburi you can see Mae Klong Market. ( see link below.)

In Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai you can get tours through local travel agencies but usually you choose one day and then leave the next morning. My suggestion is to add a day or two to Bangkok just before you fly home.
Bangkok is okay, Chiang Mai is okay but try to narrow your beach areas down to one or two places. Otherwise you will almost always be in transit or packing and unpacking. Seeing a lot of places is nice but just stopping and relaxing is nice too!!
A final day or two in Bangkok will give you an opportunity to take in a tour and do some souvenir shopping and be only a taxi ride away from the airport. (Even in Bangkok and Chiang Mai you will get a tan just walking around!)
Thank you! I think this is out plan of action..bangkok to koh smaui to krabi to chiang mai and back to bangkok for last few days. Do you think this is a good plan or should it be the other way round? Also how would we get from KS to Krabi and Krabi to Chiang Mai?? Will it be alot of travelling this way?
