Driving West to East

Hey,
Any views on driving this route in 4 weeks....

Other than the section between Chicago, Illinois and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I've driven the entire route you mapped here (I went between those two cities via Indianapolis, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio).

It is actually possible to drive this route in as little as 9 days if you stopped only for overnight sleep-overs, but since you'll want to do more than just drive, take the time to stop in some of the best cities/locations and see the sites. Some of the best (some of these are obvious, some not).

San Francisco--cable cars, fisherman's wharf, Golden Gate Bridge

Los Angeles--Hollywood, the western or southern beaches, Disneyland, La Brea Tar Pits, Huntington Library and Gardens, Getty Museum, Universal Studios

Las Vegas--great shows, warm weather, lots of people at the pools and fabulous resorts and nightclubs

Moab, Utah--Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point

Glenwood Springs, Colorado--nice hot-water springs near Aspen

Vail, Colorado--great ski resort in the winter, beautiful scenery in the summer

Chicago--great aquarium, Sears Tower, Lake Michigan seashore

South Bend, Indiana--college football hall of fame

Cleveland, Ohio--Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Washington, DC--Smithsonian, Capitol bldg, White House, Lincoln Memorial

Baltimore--Inner Harbor, Fells Point

New York--Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Broadway Shows, UN Building

Also, you could catch a baseball, hockey, or football game in many of these cities (SF, LA, Denver, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh (my favorite stadiums), Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, or New York (the football stadium is in New Jersey).

Thanks so much for your reply. Very helpful. We will look into all these places. You are pretty spot on with what we are after. Would you say May is a good time to drive this trip? Thanks

May is probably the single best month to drive this route--as long as the very unseasonable hot weather in the east doesn't continue (March was the hottest March in US history in the eastern US). I expect this "hot spell" to break, however, and it already seems to have started to do so here in April.

September would be the other great time to do this trip--and would be the start of the American football season, if you are interested in that sport.

Enjoy your trip.
