If you are looking for a hostel, I would recommend United Backpackers. It is opposite Flinders Street train station, near Federation Square.
It is a nice place with good location
I'm nervous as I've never gone travelling before.... What's Melbourne like? And job opportunities? I want to go to Sydney eventually too but don't know when.....

Got your visa? If you plan on doing any work you MUST get a work visa or you could end up on the next plane home. This can also happen if you lie to them.
Immigration might ask how much money you have and Australia being an expensive country, they know how much you will need to stay if not working.
