I’m considering going to Budapest for a weekend in vaguely November, but would like to extend the trip by approximately another week. Where do you recommend I go? Presumably this could either stay in Hungary, or could extend out of it.
You have many choices in this area.
Within Hungary, there are several small rustic villages just north of Budapest that are popular with travelers - Szentendre, Vac, Esztergom, and Visegrad. Lake Balaton in Hungary to the south is supposed to be nice, but I haven't been there. To the east are Gyor in Hungary (good for a few hours walking around), Bratislava in Slovakia, and of course Vienna. Bratislava is underrated and very enjoyable for the Trhovisko Miletičova outdoor market and the old town. If you want to just chill out in a beautiful place for a couple of days, there is a farm/B&B called U barana Jana in rural Slovakia an hour and a half north of Budapest that I highly recommend.
I don't know if you have been to Budapest before, but if not you will probably find a weekend is too short of a time to appreciate it. I would recommend at least four days there if you have the time.
