Plan to go around south east Asia, so my flight is from Manchester to Bangkok, I'll be headed to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Malaysia for roughly 3/4 months. On average how much will I need?
With one way ticket to Bangkok you might have to first purchase a Tourist Visa at home or a plane ride out of Thailand within 30 days. If you planned on entering Thailand with the free 30 day Visa Exemption stamp you get at the airport that type visa requires a verified flight out of Thailand. This may or may not be enforced at your home airport.
If you mean the Manchester in England round trip plane tickets might be quite a bit cheaper than 2 one way flights. So do the math! Transportation between countries bordering Thailand and Bangkok is not that expensive so it is easy to return to Bangkok for a flight home. Compare 2 one way flights vs round trip.
How much money you need per day is up to you. Work up a budget and see how much of your savings is left after paying for flights. Then you will know how much per day you have for spending money. Fit your spending to what you can afford. If you are in this part of the world December through late January, especially Christmas - New Years holidays, that is high season for hotel bookings and vacancies.
Not everyone has the same daily spending budget. Some tourists may spend more on a big meal in the evening than I would spend for my hotel cost and other daily spending. Some people choose expensive restaurants and nightclubs while other tourists might need to choose cheap places to eat at and choose cheap beer bars to drink at. If you need a price range maybe 70 UK pounds per day for a start. If this doesn't fit your budget stay for less time.
You can't legally work in Thailand and probably other countries without a work permit. Unless you do something illegal where if caught you could be deported. So the money you start with must support your for the entire time!
Do a Google search with your laptop and read some of the links that show up. Different countries means different visa requirements. Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia you will have to pay for visas.

With a definite return date you can more easily plan a budget out and your plane tickets might end up cheaper.
If you have a lot of money then a budget probably won't matter. But if your budget means you must always eat food of uncertain quality from cheapest source or sleeping in dodgy places - don't stay so long!

Thanks that's so helpful! I go on June the 14th 2017. I've got a one way ticket but I'm leaving some money at home so my parents can book the flight for me when I'm ready to go long as I could only get a return ticket up to 3 month maybe 4. I don't plan on staying in nice hotels and I plan to travel to see the sites rather than go out at the nights and waste my money. Can you get a work visa from England to work over there? As I'm interested in teaching in one of the places in travelling m?
Work visas are hard to get for Thailand because the government doesn't want foreigners taking jobs away from Thai citizens. Foreigners do work in Thailand but usually they have specialties in demand or they are employed by foreign companies. (Long term jobs.) Other countries you have to do some research. Some manual labor jobs will have long hours for low wages! A McDonalds back home pays better than unskilled labor in SEAsia. Plus back home your accommodation will be better.
June is low season. Some weather related issues depending on where you are. Some tourists only travel to this part of the world during rainy or hot times to save money.
How much did you plan on spending per night for hotels, guest houses or hostels?
Take the time to do some forum and Google searches for "solo woman traveler to Asia" or similar phrase. Always think safety! When lonely don't chum around with dopers or troublemakers!
You have time to work things out. Your research results might make more sense with a laptop vs a smartphone.

By checking the flight tickets, accommodation and visas you can estimate how much you'll need.
I use skyscanner www.skyscanner.net to get best rate for flight tickets. Always the best way to compare prices.
Before you fly, don't forget to get your currency changed. Plan how much you want to spend on each country. And bring your home currency as well in case you're short of foreign currency. In Bangkok there's tons on currency exchange but only accept big notes. You can also withdraw from ATM machine but they'll charge you some fees if I'm not mistaken it's around 200THB(I would prefer not to pay and save some money).
To be safe, book your accommodation beforehand. There's lots of hotel booking site you can find nowadays. I booked an apartment from AirBnB. Comfortable and clean. At least you know where you'll sleep for the night. Before you land in Bangkok, in plane, they will give a form and requires you to state where will you stay.
The most important part is to check your visa requirement. I always do my visas from -snip-. This website allows you to check your requirement and apply the visa straight away. I find it very convenient.
I wish I can travel for 3 or 4 months like you. Anyway, do let me know when you're in Malaysia. I live in Malaysia. I can bring you around Kuala Lumpur.

I plan on spending like £20 a day over there! maybe head to oz after a few month to find work there aslong as I get my working holiday visa !

If this is for hotel, food, transportation, tours and entertainment I think your budget is too low. I have come across some tourists sleeping in alleys and doorways at night time. But none were women.
(In each country on your list I can survive on fried rice. In Malaysia same thing is called nasi goreng.)

Don't be one of the desperate female travelers who end up sharing sleeping quarters with guys they meet to save money. With a laptop make Google type searches for "traveling Southeast Asia on a budget."

Rhea, is there any reason why your parents have to help you purchase the return ticket?
Generally, unless the ticket indicates otherwise (for example, some promotional fares specify when travel must begin; and end) tickets are valid for transportation for one year from date of initial use, or if unused, for one year from date of purchase.
Agree with Karazyal that your budget is tight. If you're going to Australia on a WHV, you'll need money to tide you over until you find employment. Suggest you go online to compare the cost of living in Australia vs. the U.K.

My parents aren't helping me with the ticket. I am leaving money here so I have something to come back to if needs be and that includes my flight home. If I have a return flight I'll have it in my head I can come home when I want where as this way will force me to stay.
I plan to spend £20 on average if I go over that's fine as some days will be under that budget too.
I'm planning to have around £1700 on arrival to Australia too.
