Planning on going you asia.
A few questions.
Can i take a one way flight to thailand and go from there, or do I need proof of onward travel and a return flight?
Also is anyone else planning on going to asia this year?
I want to do the whole of south east asia, and possibly borneo, Philippines and a few other countries!

How long will you be in this part of the world? If for several months do you plan on working to augment your spending money? Look at a map and find the countries you want to visit. There is some distance involved. For instance to get from Bangkok to Phuket or Hat Yai area at the bottom a bus ride will take 12 to 16 hours one way not counting waiting at bus stations and travel to them. If time is short flying the longer distances is recommended. Unless you only need a "been here" photo and move on to the next souvenir photo location. Some people do travel to get a stamp in their passport and barely see anything because they are on the way to an airport or bus station for the the next country. (Thailand alone is bigger than the UK!)
Each country you intend to visit will have their own entry requirements. Google search each country's visa requirements.
From Thailand you can go to Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos overland. There is even rail service from the top of Thailand all the way to Singapore. (Singapore is not cheap if on a tight budget!)

For Thailand you are supposed to have a flight out of Thailand within 30 days if you intend to enter with the free 30 day Visa Exemption stamp you get at a Thai airport. Sometimes this is enforced and sometimes not. The problem you might have is leaving your home airport on a one way flight to Thailand without a return flight or flight booked for another country. Your home airport is probably more likely to enforce this so they don't have to fly you back for free if rejected by Thai officials. A 60 day tourist visa will allow you to leave your home airport with a one way flight.
One way flight. Do the math. Usually on major carriers round trip is cheaper than buying 2 one way flights. Getting back to Bangkok for a return flight might be cheaper than than buying one way flights. Having a definite return date makes it easier to plan a daily budget out.

The colder it gets in Europe and North America the more tourists flock to tropical countries. November is the beginning of high season for Thailand with highest prices for hotels and highest hotel bookings closest to Christmas and New Years holiday season. Same for the Philippines with many Filipino overseas workers heading home for the holidays.
How many months will you be overseas?
If Christmas and New Years holidays is included don't wait to the last minute to book rooms!
Don't rely on a single debit card for spending money. Lose that card or have it stolen by random guests you entertain and you will be out of money! Have back up sources for spending money. (Each country has their own currency.) If using a credit or debit card overseas tell your banks where you will be before leaving home. This way when you make ATM cash withdrawals overseas the banks don't first suspect fraud!

For the whole Indonesia I think you need at least 1 month.
Unless you just interested in Bali and Jakarta, then 1 week is more than enough.
Singapore, maybe you need at least 3 days.
Malaysia, maybe 2 weeks just for the peninsular and another 1 weeks for the eastern part (Borneo).
While in Borneo, there are also Indonesian part of it (Kalimantan) and Brunei.
So for Borneo alone you need 1 month.
Thailand and the Philippines need another 2 to 3 months.
Plus Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.
How about Myanmar and Timor Leste?
My current plan is fly in to bangkok, spend a week there, southern islands, phuket, then go back up and on to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Borneo then Philippines. Does this sound like a legitimate plan?

How long will your trip be in total? No problem with buying flights for distant locations?
With a lot of money anything is possible!
When I flew to the Philippines from Bangkok I was asked for my onward travel flight information.
