30 day INDRAIL Indian rail pass? is it worth it?

Hello lovely traveling people :0)

Definitely worth it if you are going travelling. Pick them up from a mainline station, like Delhi.

If you can afford it, go first class as second class can be very crowded and the seats are nowhere as near as comfortable, and neither are the beds.

Biggest pain was queuing to book my next journey. The Indians are not much on queues and women just walk straight to the front.

Goa is very busy so book a trip out days in advance.

Meals on trains are normally cold, but at stations where you have 10-20 minutes you can buy food from stalls, shops, sellers and such as well as drinks.

Lots and lots to see in India. I had the first ever 60 day Indrail pass in Jan 1988, and still have it at home as a souvenir.

Consider buying a Lonely Planet guide to India. It's packed with useful information and tips.

Thanks for your reply :0)

I will defo upgrade to first class, the way I see it is the money you save on a hotel sleeping on the train can go towards the upgrade :0)

thanks again

Danny

I remember arriving in Hyderabad, India about 8am, by train. I left my luggage at the station, wandered a bit around town before finding a city tour due to start shortly. I went on that and later saw more of the city and then that evening got on a train to my next destination. No hotel.

The first class rail pass does command some respect when booking.

The rail carriages have a number on and a printed sheet which tells you who is seated where. Railway stations can be hectic places in the big cities but quite tranquil out of town. Do take a bottle of water with you. Cold is not important since it quickly becomes luke warm.
