Australia Railpass or Greyhound bus? little gems?

Hey peeps,

I wouldn't recommend getting a pass beforehand; it's very hard to imagine what life in Australia will really be like, and how you'll be wanting to travel about. Getting a pass can be a pretty big sunk cost, which you'll get far less use from than you now imagine.

That said, between the two you mention, definitely get the Greyhound Miles pass. There's very few places usefully reached by train (it's good for a few long stretches as you can walk about which you can't on the bus, but that's really the only benefit), while the Greyhound pass at least gives you a decent amount of flexibility, and stands you a decent chance to being used over the course of a year. (But there's frequently better deals when looking around locally; various regional bus companies have better deals, as well as specials on greyhound itself.)
